The You Know Who Girls

The You Know Who Girls: Freshman Year by Annameekee Hesik
high school & up

Abbey and Kate are best friends about to start high school. Kate is ready to make the most of high school and find her first boyfriend. Abbey is unsure on both counts. She's nervous about high school because she seems to be crushing on a hot senior girl. To further complicate matters, Abbey and Kate decide to go out for the basketball team, which at Gila High has a large percentage of those "you-know-who" girls.

This is a terrific book. Abbey is a great character and I really felt for her. She's got the regular pressures of high school plus all the extra of being "different." We all know how hard that is; no one really wants to be different in high school. Abbey struggles with accepting herself and whether or not her friends will be also be able to accept her.
The title has "Freshman Year" in the title. That really makes me hope this is intended to be series because I really want to know how things go with Abbey. I think the author did a wonderful job of making Abbey a real character. That is partly because (according to the author bio) she had a high school life very similar to Abbey.

Verdict: highly recommended
FYI: Lesbians. I guarantee someone, somewhere will challenge this book. Probably without actually reading it first.Pin It
